Gentle Yoga Exercises To Aid Relaxation

Did you know, that yoga started in India over 5000 years ago. It is an old set of exercises that develop the body mind and spirit. It uses gentle movements, deep breathing long stretches and is perfect to relax before going to bed. It is gentle so it doesn’t overstimulate your body and keep you awake. It helps to slow down your body and mind and prepares you for a good night’s sleep. In addition, practicing the Asana poses also helps to strengthen your nervous system and to relieve anxiety.

Asana poses work on both the mental and physical side of your body. In addition your digestive system, cardiovascular health, muscles and glands, are also benefited. A quiet and peaceful mind is another benefit, because it increases alertness and concentration. So if you suffer from chronic insomnia and sometimes just can’t get to sleep yoga can be a way of helping you overcome this without drugs. If you can’t get asleep when you go to bed, do some gentle stretches and meditate for around 20 minutes before bed. This will calm your mind and decrease worries and anxieties you may have.

If you happen to wake up during the night and can’t get back to sleep try some deep breathing exercises. Listen and focus on the sound of your own breathing. Focus on your chest as it moves up and down. Begin at your head and then try to relax each set of muscles. Another thing you could try is chanting. Any phrase will do, just concentrate on that word or phrase until everything else has been erased from your mind.

Aim for a 30 minute practice session each day. You will see an improvement in your body and you will find a new peace of mind.

A lot of the poses can be very difficult. Choose the ones that feel comfortable for you. If you can, try to go to yoga class and find a teacher that will help teach you some of the Asana poses. Finally, remember to try and never strain and always relax.
